We are very sorry to have had to cancel Flatrock Fest for this summer. The club executive decided this at our monthly meeting late last week. The access trail to Main Face has deteriorated to a point where it has become dangerous. A number of options were considered for repairing the trail, or moving the event to other areas. Neither of which would have suited the target audience, or been possible with our volunteer base. While it’s still reasonable to use the approach at this point (for a climber), it is not reasonable for the general public, let alone 150 people in a single day.
Not only is the trail in dangerous condition, but it looks like a complete collapse is imminent. We recommend being cautious when using the trail, tread lightly, or access via rappel. Our plan is to have an long term solution in place by next season. This will involve some volunteer work, engineers, and a pile of fund raising to get it back up to a usable standard. We have also contacted the Alpine Club of Canada head office, and East Coast Trail Association for consulting and help on this project.
We have sent out this information via email to the club members along with a link to a short survey. The survey will allow us to rework the rest of the summer and fall events by aiming towards your survey answers. Please complete it as soon as possible and let us know if you did not receive the email.
Once the results are in, the club executive will meet, and then follow up with an event list.
