Junior Team

 Team-Banner_GSL8101

Newfoundland and Labrador has its first competitive junior climbing team. The team is sanctioned by the Alpine Club of Canada (ACC) through its Newfoundland and Labrador Section and competes in CEC events across Canada.

The team consists of male and female athletes between the ages from 7 to 17 coached by internationally experienced climbers Ben Winstanley and Joel Harvie and train at the Wallnuts Climbing Centre in St. John’s. They compete in various internationally recognized Under 17 categories.

Climbing sports are booming internationally and this province is no different. The governing body is the International Federation of Sport Climbing and is officially recognized by the International Olympic Committee.

As an extremely demanding competitive and recreation sport, athletes test their individual physical, mental and technical skills and abilities to the limits in many diverse and challenging environments from the man-made indoor climbing facility to the natural rock formations of the Newfoundland outdoors.

Competitive climbing sees athletes assess and execute a designated climbing route or course earning points for how far they succeed in the task in an allotted time. No two courses are ever the same. Lead rope, bouldering and speed climbing are some of the events you will find in competitive sport climbing.
