FlatBloc Fest

Saturday August 26th, 2017.

To end our ACCNL summer bouldering events, we have decided to host FLATBLOC FEST: a bouldering competition on the Flatrock beamer!

The event will run Saturday, August 26th from 11am-6pm. If it rains, we will move it to Sunday the 27th.

Joel Harvie will not only be hosting the event, but is also working on a Avalon Bouldering Guidebook. He plans to make some limited edition prints of the Flatrock section of the guidebook which will be available ONLY at this event.

The Outfitters, Adventure Gear & Apparel is also coming to the party with some rad prizes for the winners, and a few draw prizes as well!

Not the toughest boulderer around? You should still participate! This is a great chance to climb with other people, learn the climbs/moves, and gain experience!

The event costs $5 for members, and $15 for non-members. Admission enters you into the competition, the prize draw, and gets you a copy of the Flatrock Guide (while supplies last).
(ACC memberships are only $50 a year!  …JOIN HERE!)

As we draw closer to the event, more information regarding formatting will become available. For now, know that we will be hosting a men’s and women’s division, and that all climb difficulties are worth the same points!

Following the survey we have designed a few new events for the late summer/fall. Each will end up with a Facebook (public) event but we have decided to notify members first for a few of them so you have first pick. If interested in an event email the trip leader to sign up or ask questions.

2017 Flatrock Climbing Festival

FLATROCK FEST CANCELLED FOR 2017

We are very sorry to have had to cancel Flatrock Fest for this summer. The club executive decided this at our monthly meeting late last week. The access trail to Main Face has deteriorated to a point where it has become dangerous. A number of options were considered for repairing the trail, or moving the event to other areas. Neither of which would have suited the target audience, or been possible with our volunteer base. While it’s still reasonable to use the approach at this point (for a climber), it is not reasonable for the general public, let alone 150 people in a single day.

Not only is the trail in dangerous condition, but it looks like a complete collapse is imminent. We recommend being cautious when using the trail, tread lightly, or access via rappel. Our plan is to have an long term solution in place by next season. This will involve some volunteer work, engineers, and a pile of fund raising to get it back up to a usable standard. We have also contacted the Alpine Club of Canada head office, and East Coast Trail Association for consulting and help on this project.

We have sent out this information via email to the club members along with a link to a short survey. The survey will allow us to rework the rest of the summer and fall events by aiming towards your survey answers. Please complete it as soon as possible and let us know if you did not receive the email.

Once the results are in, the club executive will meet, and then follow up with an event list.

Thanks all

Leo van Ulden – ACCNL Access Officer

Parking at Flatrock

NOTICE: Parking at Flatrock.

The Flatrock town council is concerned about the increased amount of traffic from climbers and hikers as it is causing parking problems for the town. They asked me to pass this along this to the climbing community.

1/ They will be erecting no parking signs on the upper part of Wades lane in the near future.

2/ There is new larger parking area accessible at the end (bottom?) of Wades lane (near the green trailer) and above the public wharf …which is the trail head for the East Coast Trails’ Father Troy Trail. There are signs on the main road for this. There is also parking available in the Ocean View Park which is opposite the public wharf. So in an effort to keep relationships on good term with the good people of Flatrock lets try to respect their wishes.

You can visit the Town of Flatrock website and contact their town hall for any further information.

THANKS!…Greg
